Michael Crum, GMB, CGB, CGR
President & Design Consultant ()
As President and Co-owner of Summit Design Remodeling, Michael Crum manages the conceptual design and architectural process for each project, as well as the overall operations of the company.Michael brings almost three decades of residential design and construction experience to Summit, both in new homes and remodeling.
Located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Summit specializes in residential remodeling and approaches every project with a different concept than others in the industry; Michael encourages clients to design their own reality.
Michael does this by involving them in the design process, asking enough questions, and knowing what works and what doesn't work for every type of home. Most importantly, he allows the client to guide the pace of the project, establish start and stop dates, provide budgets he'll always adhere to, and be willing to take advice wherever appropriate.
Michael holds the following professional designations/credentials:
• Graduate Master Builder (GMB)
• Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)
• Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR)
• Licensed General Contractor
• Certified EIFS Inspector
• Licensed Home Inspector (Inactive)
• Certified Moisture Analyst
• Certified SoftPlan CAD Designer
Michael has extensive knowledge of structural systems, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems and all other components of residential construction. He has consistently been active in the professional development aspects of the industry in the following associations:
• National Home Builder Association (NAHB)
• National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI)
• Exterior Design Institute (EDI)
• American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI)
• National Association of Realtors (NAR)
Michael spent many years working for a large volume national remodeling firm in various sales, design, and management functions. Michael says, "While this was a wonderful and educational experience, I really missed the close working relationship with my clients. Working with Summit allows me to have the kind of one on one relationship with the client, and project, from the initial consultation, thru design, and to completion. To me, it's not just about the bricks and sticks; it's about insuring that the clients' expectations are exceeded and the client experiences minimal disruption in their daily lives during the process."
Laurie Crum
Vice President & Design Consultant ()
Co-owner, Laurie Crum, manages interior space planning and materials selections for each project. She works directly with our clients to select all of the elements that go into your project - such as cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, fixtures, appliances - and the details that go along with each. Laurie has a keen eye for both design and function.Laurie has considerable experience designing speculative and custom homes as well as remodeling projects and enjoys working with clients to capture their specific vision for their home. When it comes to choosing various building products such as cabinetry, flooring, lighting, and colors, there are many things to choose from and often an overwhelming number of choices. Laurie can assist you through this maze and guide you to components that are not only cost effective, durable, and environmentally friendly, but work well together.
Laurie also has an extensive background in the rehabilitation industry and has a special interest in universal home planning and design and helping seniors to age in place, something that is very important to consider for homeowners of all ages. Laurie has helped clients with physical limitations to overcome the barriers often found in standard construction by performing a customized assessment of the client's abilities and working with them to design a home that is functional as well as beautiful.
When asked about why she enjoys the construction industry so much, she replied, "There are two phases of the remodeling process that are my absolute favorites - the beginning design process where I brainstorm with my clients for the best design of their dreams and then the product selection phase when all of the finishing products are put together and the client gets to see their design come to life. Seeing our client's happy with their remodeled home is what it's all about."
Laurie is an avid dog lover and in addition to spending time with her husband, Michael, and her Cocker Spaniel, Abby, she likes to volunteer her time as a dog kennel assistant at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Seeing these wonderful rescue dogs going to a good home is gratifying for her.
